Discover Bachata: the 'Hidden Gem' of Latin dancing.
Learn more about how bachata music and dance style compares to other more popular latin dances; our approach to teaching Bachata why you should consider dancing bachata at Urban Salsa.
While Salsa is considered as the ‘King’, Bachata is often hailed as the "Hidden Gem" of Latin dance.
Bachata originated in the Dominican Republic in the early 20th century. Initially, it was regarded as music of the rural working class and was often performed with just a guitar, maracas, and bongo drums.
Bachata boasts its own set of enchanting qualities that set it apart as a beloved dance style. Bachata music and bachata dancing allows for a more profound connection with both the music and your dance partner. Bachata's passionate and romantic ambiance has won the hearts of many, making it a delightful and cherished Latin dance style, celebrated for its unique attributes. Unlike the fast-paced energy of Salsa, Bachata invites you to savor each step, indulge in expressive body movements, and convey profound emotions.
Bachata as a music genre and subsequently how it’s danced has evolved over the decades. Today, there’s Bachata Moderna (or Modern Bachata) and Sensual Bachata in addition to traditional bachata as it’s danced in the Dominican Republic.
Despite the different flavours of bachata music and dance expressions: at its core, bachata is danced over two counts of 4, with every 4th count being a tap that typically coincides with the bongo. Step, step, step – tap…Step, step, step - tap!
Learn about the different styles of Bachata and how this incredible dance and music compares to Salsa in our comprehensive blog article: Bachata vs Salsa.
