What is Salsa On-1?
Salsa On 1, also known as LA Style, is a dynamic and energetic dance style that hails from the sunny streets of Los Angeles. It is characterised by its smooth, linear movements and is often considered a fantastic choice for beginners. Salsa On1 is all about connecting with the music, showcasing intricate footwork; and creating a sense of ‘flash’, ‘flamboyance’, and ‘flow’ on the dance floor.
Why Choose Salsa On-1?
Urban Salsa is renowned for teaching Salsa On1 and developing beginners into exceptional dancers from Levels 2 and up. Salsa On1 classes at Urban Salsa are on every Sunday and Wednesday evening – check out our timetable and term dates for further information.
What is Salsa On2?
Salsa On2, also known as Mambo or New York Style, has its roots in the bustling streets of the Big Apple. It is characterised by a stronger emphasis on rhythm, intricate turns, and footwork. This style is famous for the feeling of being more ‘connected’ to the music, its syncopated timing and its ability to let you express yourself through intricate body movements.
The main difference between Salsa On1 and Salsa On2 is that the break step for On1 starts on the first count of the 8-count musical bar for salsa dancing (i.e. 1, 2, 3 – 5, 6, 7). On the other hand, On2 Salsa is where the break step begins on the second count (i.e. 1, 2, 3 – 5, 6, 7) “On the count of “2”). On2 dancing typically marks the beat of the Clave – learn more about Salsa Musicality
Why Choose Salsa On2?
Urban Salsa runs On2 Salsa dance lessons every Monday night. Salsa On1 classes are on Sundays and Wednesdays. See our timetable for further details.
Choosing between Salsa On1 (LA Style) and Salsa On2 (New York/Mambo style) ultimately depends on your personal preferences and dance goals.
Salsa On1 is ideal for beginners or those completely new to Latin dancing and looking for a more relaxed introduction to Salsa.
Salsa On2 is ideal for more experienced dancers looking to challenge themselves and grow, or those with a very strong sense of rhythym and musicality.
In On1 dancing, you learn to dance “On” the rhythm and count, whereas with On2 dancing you learn to dance IN the rhythm because On2 dancing is inextricably linked to specific musical instrument(s) throughout the song.
